MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. on Saturday again called for support for the Philippines’ bid to join the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) during this year’s first Vin d’Honneur at the Malacañan Palace. 

The Philippines is vying for a non-permanent seat in the UNSC for the term 2027-2028. The Security Council is primarily responsible for maintaining international peace and security.

“I take this opportunity anew to convey to your respective governments our earnest request for your support to our UNSC bid, and we hope for your support when the time comes when we are indeed sitting as a member of the Security Council,” Marcos said in his speech.

The UNSC has 15 members and each member has one vote and under the UN Charter, all member states are obliged to comply with Council decisions.

Marcos also underscored that the Philippines has a “rich experience in building peace, forging consensus, and finding new paths for cooperation.”

Philex Mining president and CEO Eulalio Austin Jr. said they have an application to explore a nickel tenement adjacent to the firm’s site in Zambales.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) shed 0.49 percent, or 36.67 points, to close at 7,400.33.

Marcos likewise said that the country’s bid is in line with the view that multilateralism must be strengthened through reforming the Security Council and revitalizing the General Assembly. 

The Philippines last took a seat in the Security Council for the term 2004-2005.
